Aldon Smith Arrested for Hit-and-Run and Third DUI

Summary: Aldon Smith is facing legal trouble again after being arrested on Thursday night.

According to The Guardian, San Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith, 25, was arrested last night by the Santa Clara police. Smith was charged with hit and run, suspicion of driving under the influence, and vandalism. USA Today adds that Smith said, “I need to speak, and I want everybody to understand: This wasn’t a DUI. The situation that I had could’ve been handled differently, and I apologize for everybody I did let down and I apologize for how it all played out.”

Tom Brady still faces a four-game suspension.

Smith’s career had a strong start: in 2011, he was drafted seventh overall by the 49ers. However, things have taken a negative turn for the professional player. Last year, Smith had to sit out over half the season because he was suspended for violating the NFL’s substance abuse and personal conduct policies. Currently, Smith is being held on a $26,000 bond.

Adrian Peterson also faces legal challenges.

In April 2014, Smith was arrested at LAX after he was selected for a secondary screening. Smith did not cooperate with TSA agents, and even told them that he had a bomb. However, no charges were filed against him at that time.

In October 2013, Smith faced three felony counts of illegal possession of an assault weapon. Those charges were related to a June 2012 party he hosted at his home. Apparently, several shots were fired that night, and two guests were hurt. Investigators found five unregistered weapons on the property. Smith’s charges were later reduced to misdemeanor charges.

Aaron Hernandez was found guilty of murder in April.

In September 2013, Smith was arrested on suspicion of DUI and marijuana possession. Smith had hit a tree while driving, and voluntarily missed five games. Smith also checked himself into a rehab facility.

In January 2012, Smith was arrested on suspicion of DUI in Miami Beach.

As for Smith’s future, according to the Washington Post, Smith has been released from the San Francisco 49ers. Coach Jim Tomsula said, “Although Aldon won’t be playing football here, we will be supporting him. He will not be alone.”
