The market is divided into Northern California, Southern California, Northwest, Southwest, Midwest, Northeast, South, and Southeast.

The Northern California market of San Francisco has a strong need for corporate associates. The litigation area is hard to determine since there are a few job openings but they have been open for several months. San Francisco’s legal real estate demand is healthy. A slower area is technology transactions and dead areas are antitrust, bankruptcy, construction, energy, ERISA, healthcare, project finance, tax, insurance defense, trusts & estates, trademark, and white collar crime.

Southern California – Los Angeles has a big demand for corporate, real estate, energy transactions/project finance and litigation. Steady markets are in labor and employment, environmental/land use. The dead areas in Southern California are in bankruptcy, copyright/trademark, and patent prosecution.

The city of Seattle, in the Northwest sector, is one of the fastest growing cities. Hot practice areas are in litigation, corporate, and patent prosecution. The only slow areas are in real estate, labor and employment, healthcare, and environmental.

The Southwest market in the Phoenix area has a hot area in corporate. The steady practice areas are in real estate, labor and employment, and patent prosecution. Slower areas are in litigation, trusts and estates, and technology transactions.

Saint Louis in the Midwest sector has been quitter for a few seasons but has started picking back up. Many law firms in the city may be more willing to speak with partners that bring in $500,000 in portable business, especially in the areas of IP prosecution, corporate law, real estate, and tax, estate planning, and employee benefits.

Washington D.C. and the Northeast sector have not changed much since the beginning of the year but is holding steady. The highest demands are for litigation, corporate, and intellectual property/patent prosecution.

The South sector in Texas is strong overall. The strongest areas have been patent prosecution and employment.

Southeast United States in Florida has always been strong in litigation, starting the trend that the rest of the country is following.
