Ride-hailing service Uber has been faced with a large amount of legal problems during the upstart of the company in the United States and worldwide. Their ongoing fight with Spain is now being taken up by the European Courts of Justice, something that Uber is very excited about.
Moving the case from a local government to a widespread authority will eliminate each individual town or city from entering into legal disputes with the company. The European Council is also very technology driven and in support of expanding a digital society.
The European Commission has already been working towards a plan on how to regulate ride sharing companies like Uber and Lyft as a whole. Uber announced in a press conference that they look forward to the EU’s decision because they rarely want to close innovation from the market.
Countries that currently ban Uber, like Germany and France, are being investigated by the EU. Currently, France has a law called the Thevenoud Law that requires those that carry passengers in their car to get a special license and insurance.
The decision from the EU is expected to come during the fall of next year so Uber still has a long way to go until the final future of the company in Europe is decided. Until then, all other cases should be put on hold.
