After former Olympic athlete Bruce Jenner’s SUV rammed Kim Howe’s Lexus in February, pushing her into oncoming traffic and killing her, he released a statement the next day, Feb. 8, stating of the incident “My heartfelt and deepest sympathies go out to the family and loved ones, and to all of those who were involved or injured in this terrible accident. It is a devastating tragedy and I cannot pretend to imagine what this family is going through at this time. I am praying for them. I will continue to cooperate in every way possible.”
All the sympathy tropes were there: “sympathies…loved ones…devastating tragedy…I cannot imagine what they are going through…praying for them.” Nevertheless, Howe’s stepchildren, William Howe, 57, and Dana Redmond, 60, have responded with a wrongful death lawsuit, stating they’ve suffered “enormous damages and losses” after Howe’s death.
It must be said that Jenner’s team of lawyers have responded to this with tact, asking the suit be dismissed because the stepchildren are “financially independent,” adults “not financially dependent upon the decedent for the ‘necessities of life.’”
They also stated, “We … continue to express sincerest sympathies for the friends and family of Kimberly Howe. … The plaintiff’s lack of standing to file this case is no comment at all upon their grief or affection. It is merely a statement of law.”
Jenner, for his part, participated in what is an ongoing investigation of the crash, passing a field sobriety test and voluntarily submitting blood to prove he was not intoxicated.
