legal union

Summary: Law firms and the legal industry operate under union-like conditions. Break the rules and you will find yourself unemployable.

Read “Four Union-Like Rules of All Law Firms You Need to Know About” by Harrison Barnes to learn more.

In order to make it in the legal field you can’t let your ego get in the way. Your ego is that voice in your head that screams that you are better than a job and complains that nothing is perfect. Find a way to quiet your ego and remember that your work is not about you, it’s about your clients, superiors, group and profession. There are four rules to help you get along with the union-like legal industry.

  1. Expect to follow the specific procedures that a law firm goes by. There is a pecking order for a reason and a certain way things are done. You will have to deal with it, even if you don’t agree with things, until the day that are the boss.
  2. Stay professional by not complaining about superiors, clients and co-workers. Never say something negative about a colleague or a client. This can jeopardize your job and make others not want to work with you.
  3. Take every job that is given to you when you can. When you are asked to do a job but turn it down, you won’t be asked first the next time. Eventually, you will find yourself at the bottom and only getting a few odd jobs here and there. Work is given to those that are enthusiastic and want the work.
  4. Don’t admit or show your weaknesses. Act like you know what you are doing or find a way to defend it. Your job is to defend your client to the best of your abilities and not discuss your problems.
