Summary: Michael Gordon has joined WilmerHale as a partner in its Washington, D.C. office.
WilmerHale has announced that Michael Gordon, a senior counselor to the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, will rejoin the firm in April as a partner in its Washington, D.C. office. Gordon will work in the Financial Institutions and Strategic Response practices. Gordon’s experience will expand the firm’s consumer finance regulatory and enforcement capabilities and congressional investigations experience.

Anthony Trenton joined the firm’s London office last fall.
The Financial Institutions Practice is well known for serving high-profile clients in complex federal regulatory and legislative, litigation, business transaction, and enforcement matters.

WilmerHale partner Stephanie Avakian was named the SEC Enforcement Director last year.
As a senior counselor to the CFBP director, Gordon offered strategic advice to the director and senior CFBP officials on policy issues and enforcement actions. Prior to that position, Gordon was the deputy general counsel at the CFBP from 2011-2012. When the Bureau was established in 2010, Gordon served on the implementation team. Gordon also previously served as a counselor to the General Counsel of the United States Department of the Treasury.
Last year, former FBI director Robert Mueller joined the firm.
Gordon also served as chief investigative counsel for U.S. House Chairman Henry Waxman on the House Energy and Commerce Committees, as well as senior investigative counsel on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.
Gordon earned his degrees from Harvard College and the University of Michigan Law School. He began his legal career in 1998 as an associate and counsel at Wilmer Cutler & Pickering. While there he worked on government enforcement matters and litigation. He worked there until began his career in public service in 2006.
