Law Student Subdues Mugger Who Stole Woman’s Purse

Summary: Law student chases down and apprehends purse snatcher.

Not only does Daniel Perry study law, but he knows when to take matters into his own hands. The Atlanta-area student noticed a woman being attacked in downtown Nashville Thursday night. Uncertain of the situation, he asked the woman what happened.

“I could kind of tell something was up. I couldn’t really tell what was going on.”

Nevertheless, he soon was informed that the man had hit her on the head and taken her purse. Upset that the woman had been attacked and robbed, Perry quickly chased the attacker down.

“I didn’t know if he had a weapon or not. We kind of wrestled then I got him down to the ground and held him there,” he later reported. “I don’t like to get into the middle of anything, but as soon as I knew she was hurt by this guy I just felt I got to get this guy. I used to wrestle in high school so I am not afraid of wrestling with someone.”

For his efforts, he was able to detain the robber, with some help from a public works worker, and that man, James Oliphant, was apprehended and put in jail with a $75,000 bond for the aggravated robbery as well as for violating the sex offender registry for failing to register his new address.

As for the victim, she is expected to recover from her injury. As Perry reported, “I would say she was fairly traumatized. It was a bizarre experience. She thanked me a lot. I am just thankful I was there to be able to help her.”

Though wrestling acumen can be a boost, one wonders if that extra bravado could not have also cost him his life, had the mugger a gun. In the heat of the moment, however, Daniel risked it.
