Woman Arrested for Posing as Lawyer

Summary: A woman in Utah has been arrested for posing as a lawyer.

Though it’s unclear why she would do so, Karla Carbo, 29, of South Jordan, has been arrested by Utah police for posing as a lawyer. Using the name and bar number of a legitimate attorney, Carbo has represented others in court at least three times these last six months, including when she negotiated a plea agreement a week ago on behalf of a client in Summit County, near Salt Lake City.

The gig was up when the other lawyer was summoned to Draper, where Carbo was representing a client. She also submitted a bar application under the other lawyer’s name. It was rejected, as Sherriff’s Capt. Justin Martinez said on Wednesday.

Carbo has therefore been arrested for fraud, forgery, and identity theft on Tuesday, as the Associated Press reported. Police believe there may be more cases where Carbo posed as a lawyer, and it is believe that most of her clients were Hispanic immigrants.

Though Carbo was able to convincingly negotiate the plea deal, it is uncertain whether she has any legal training. The plea deal will also be cancelled. It isn’t yet clear what Carbo’s motives were for posing as a lawyer. Hopefully when she faces her charges in court, she will be represented by an actual lawyer.
