Sinkhole in Florida Swallows Car

Summary: A sinkhole in the state of Florida has swallowed a car and the owner of the property is on the hook for the money needed to perform surveys.

A sinkhole measuring 10 feet by 10 feet swallowed a car in Holiday, Florida earlier this week, according to WTSP.

On Monday morning, Anna Maria Boi Jones noticed that the tires on her car seemed to be sinking into the driveway of her home. Just 15 minutes later, her Hyundai Accent was swallowed by the sinkhole.

Her home has been condemned and she blames all of this on construction happening nearby to build a sewer lift station.

Jones said, “I don’t think it’s anything else because of the fact that we are in Florida and it’s mostly sand – you know – the land is sand.”

Emergency officials have said that five other homes in the area should also be evacuated. Geologists have said that the hole is not getting wider, but it is getting deeper as it settles.

Larry Pickering, the property manager from Holiday Travel Park, where Jones lives, said, “They think the hole is getting bigger. There’s a lot of people in danger. These homes are in danger. The sewage project out there. I blame them. They’ve been drawing water for the last couple of weeks out of here and we believe that maybe they got into one of the aquifers.”

Since the sinkhole is on private property, Jones must contact her insurance company in order to have a geological survey performed.
