Darren Vann Refuses to Speak to Judge During Initial Court Hearing

Summary: Indiana murder suspect Darren Deon Vann made his initial court appearance on Wednesday, but refused to speak to the judge during the hearing, causing it to be postponed.

Darren Vann, the man who confessed to killing at least seven women in Indiana, made his first court appearance on Wednesday. During the appearance he refused to speak to the judge, who postponed the hearing until next week, according to The New York Times.

Vann made his court appearance in a courtroom in Lake County Jail with his hands cuffed in front of his waist. He was escorted by two corrections officers. Magistrate Kathleen Sullivan presided over the hearing and asked Vann if he swore to tell the truth during this hearing.

Vann refused to respond to the judge, who asked the question a second time. Vann again failed to answer the judge’s question. When the judge asked Vann if he was going to take part in the hearing, Vann refused to answer. He still did not answer even after his public defender spoke with him.

“The hearing is aborted, and we’ll try this in a week,” Judge Sullivan said.

Sullivan noted that Vann would stay in jail, potentially for the remainder of his life, until he participated in an initial hearing.

Sullivan granted two motions in court on Wednesday. She ordered the parties involved in the case not to discuss it and ruled that Vann is allowed to speak with investigators if he initiates contact.
