In-house employment attorney jobs are increasing even as legal jobs are doing the disappearing act in most practice areas. Irrespective of whether the economy is ailing or is in robust health employment, attorneys are needed. In an ailing economy, downsizing companies layoff workers who, facing financial hardship, take recourse with legal action to redress their woes. In a vigorous economy, companies need legal services to ensure the stringent labor laws are being compiled with, and that the rights of both the employer and employee are safeguarded. This has led to a surfeit of in-house employment attorney jobs in Chicago and experts predict that this growth will continue to swell in the future.

However, the competition is intense. With a continuous stream of fresh law graduates being added to the thousands who are already looking for work, finding the right opening is an onerous task. However, they can make their task a lot easier by logging on to, a leading job website, listing hundreds of jobs from even the remotest corners of the country. Adding to this, offers sagacious career advice and comprehensive information on what the job entails and the pros and cons of an in-house job.

The important thing is not only to find the right openings but also to beat the competition to it. Since it can be safely assumed that all prospective job hunters are equally qualified, they must have that little bit extra to convince their interviewers that they are better than the rest. This could include being technology-enabled and having expertise in using computer tools, combined with an ability to streamline work in an efficient manner that reduces repetition or duplication.

It also pays to understand what your work is likely to entail. You are primarily there to help the company achieve its business objectives, keeping in mind the legal constraints. The company should be made aware of its legal risks in all that it does. Labor rules are exceedingly complex and you should ensure that all workplace policies are in fulfillment of local, state, and federal employment mandates.

Apart from being the conduit between employer and employee protecting the rights and interests of both the parties, in-house employment attorneys act as the company’s conscience and create an ethical working atmosphere within it. Working within the constraints of law and always doing and making others do the right thing is an honorable role that the attorney fulfills. Furthermore, it is your obligation to maintain top confidentiality with the business secrets that the company confides in you, not only during your tenure with the company but even after your employment with them has terminated.

Surveys reveal that companies faced litigation in many areas but the maximum numbers of court cases were in wage and overtime disputes, discrimination based on religion and color, sexual harassment, and unlawful termination of employment. Regulatory bodies also gave cause for concern for finding companies inadequately maintaining workplace safety standards.

Job prospects for employment attorneys is reasonably secure given that they are needed in both types of economies – the good and the bad. However, salaries will depend on who they work for, their years of experience, and the worth and value they bring to their respective organizations. Given that employment practice is one of the few legal fields that is still in demand and promises to remain so, considering taking up in-house employment attorney jobs in Chicago would be well worth the risk.
