Not only do artists find innumerable clever things to say through a given medium or genre, but they can be equally clever in forging new mediums. Carvings and sculptures need not restrict themselves to marble, but artists have rendered stunning creations from soap, wood, vegetables, fruit, and any other material they can to hone a technique upon and render through it something altogether unseen under the sun until now.
Consider these pictures of tree sculptures. Why cut down a tree when you can use it as is to create an organic art form that lives on in the forest?
