Brown Rudnick LLP is pleased to announce that Ignacio Torterola has joined the firm as a partner in the International Arbitration Group in the Washington, D.C. office. Mr. Torterola joins the firm from Joseph F. Ryan, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Brown Rudnick, stated, “We are delighted to welcome Ignacio to the firm. Our work in the international arbitration arena is of critical importance to our clients with global interests. As we work to deepen our international arbitration platform worldwide, Ignacio will take a significant lead in our work before international tribunals in the United States and Latin America.”

Mr. Torterola’s experience includes advising and representing clients before international arbitral tribunals, as well as in litigation proceedings relating to both commercial disputes and the application of international investment treaties. He has dealt with many complex issues that arose from Argentina’s economic, social, and political crises. Mr. Torterola has represented Argentina in over 35 ICSID and UNCITRAL arbitrations under the Argentine BITs with the United States, France, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, Chile, and the Netherlands. The issues he handled on behalf of Argentina included water and sanitation, manufacturing, oil and gas, infrastructure and the financial services industries.
Mr. Torterola previously held the position of counsel and Deputy Director of the Office of the Argentine Treasury Attorney General, which represents Argentina in international legal disputes. He was a member of the Hearings Team as well as the International Investment and Commercial Arbitration Group. He was also the Head of the Argentine Liaison Office before the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) at the Argentine Embassy in Washington, D.C. In addition, he has represented Argentina before the OECD Investment Committee and UNCTAD Investment and Enterprise Committee. He also negotiated the World Trade Organization Dispute Settlement Understanding.
Mr. Torterola is a graduate of the Universidad Catolica de Santa Fe (J.D. equivalent). He earned his Master Degree in Civil Law from the Universidad Nacional del Litoral, his Master Degree in International Commercial and Trade Law from the Universita Degli Studi di Pisa, his Master Degree in Diplomacy and International Law from Instituto del Servicio Exterior de la Nacion, and his LL.M. in International Legal Studies from Cornell University Law School.
