Over Three Thousand Jobs Added to Legal Field

Summary: The largest increase in legal sector jobs since 2013 has been reported by the Wall Street Journal, offering a glimmer of hope that the market is improving for attorneys and law students nationwide.

Things may be looking up for attorneys in the United States after several years of a suffering job market. The Bureau of Labor Statistics has added the largest job gain in the legal sector since 2013, LPB Network reports. The addition of legal jobs, which was also reported by the Wall Street Journal, stated that the increase reverses the total number of legal jobs lost since January of this year, and yields a net gain of 3,000 jobs for 2014 thus far. This is the largest increase in legal sector jobs since 2009, the Wall Street Journal explained. The news is certainly welcomed by law students and recent graduates, many of whom have struggled to find work.

In determining its calculations, the Bureau of Labor Statistics includes non-attorney positions. These include paralegals, process servers, notaries, legal consultants, and patent agents.

The Wall Street Journal noted that the total number of legal jobs is now 1,139,900. However, employment levels are still well below those set in 2007, before the recession hit lawyers hard all over the country.

Overall, the United States’ job growth has slowed to the lowest point of the entire year, after numbers had crept up over the previous six months.
