Charles Jason Moreland Charged for Making Threats to Harry Reid

Summary: The man suspected of threatening Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and his family, Charles Jason Moreland, was charged this week in a Tulsa, Oklahoma court on multiple counts. He faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and his family were threatened by a man from Oklahoma and that man was charged on Wednesday, according to Reuters.

The man charged has been identified as 31-year-old Charles Jason Moreland, of Tulsa. He is suspected of sending email messages laced with profanities to the Democratic senator from Nevada back in the month of April.

Some of the email messages said that if Reid “ever steps out foot out of D.C., he will be done. You’re a dead … man Harry Reid,” according to the court documents.

The office for Reid did not comment on the charges and neither did a lawyer for Moreland.

Moreland was taken into custody on July 31, but the court documents were not unsealed until this week. He could be sentenced to no more than 10 years in prison if he is convicted of the charges filed against him.

Moreland submitted messages to the congressional website of Reid that said he thought the senator committed fraud and treason against him. This was released in the affidavit from the U.S. investigators working the case and presented to the federal court in Tulsa.

Moreland had a threat assessment conducted by the United States Secret Service after he reportedly sent an email in September of 2013 to the White House. The email threatened to kill people if monitoring of his cell phone and internet did not come to an end, according to the affidavit.

Charges filed against Moreland include trying to intimidate a federal official and the federal official’s family. He is facing one charge of using interstate communications to make threats as well.
