Street Harassment is Still Common in NYC Today

It seems as though street harassment of women is still a problem in New York City. No one really knows the reason for this, but a new video seems to be making headway with the issue. The video has more than 6 million likes on Facebook and has gone viral all over the internet.

The video lasts just five minutes, but is definitely worth a watch when you get the chance. We have embedded it in this post for you to enjoy.

The video consists of real-life experiences near Union Square when a group of friends attached Go Pro video cameras to their bodies. The group also interviewed multiple people near campuses in the city to learn of their experiences with harassment when walking around the city.

The end of the video features interactions between two people about the way women dress in public and how it could possibly cause the harassment they face on the street.

Here is the final exchange:

“I think a lot of the focus, on prevention of harassment centers on empowering women to make choices for themselves that include not walking alone at night, or not wearing like, or watching what you wear on the street or watching how much you drink when you’re walking home, and like, or when you plan on walking home or traveling alone and I think that’s like quite frankly the wrong way to go about it. But at the same time I don’t know how you adjust the other side, because it seems like this never-ending cycle.

I think sometimes it has to be a little true that if you dress like that like the way some guys see some people in the street…

Don’t, don’t keep talking…

Why? No but why? It’s still obviously wrong for people to do it but you shouldn’t go out like that if you think that…

You think going out dressed a certain way, is like asking for some sort of attention?

Attention. Not what happened to her in the morning obviously, but it’s verbal also.”
