Woman Charged with Burglary After Showering, Eating and Sleeping in Home

A 19-year-old woman has been charged with theft, burglary and criminal mischief after reportedly breaking into a home in St. Augustine Beach and taking a shower, wearing the owner’s pajamas, eating food and taking a nap, according to News4Jax.com.

The woman has been identified as Chancy Layton by the St. Augustine Beach police. Layton broke into the home at 9:30 p.m. on Friday. It is located on Third Street in the town. Layton told officers who responded to the house that a friend told her the house was empty and she could use an unlocked door on the balcony. She also claims that friend told her she could stay at the house.

Layton fled the house and left her purse and passport behind when the homeowners arrived at 2:30 a.m. She said she was frightened to see them come home.

“Not what I expected to see when I walked into my house. We just stood there a bit, looking at each other, like, ‘What do we do?'” Cheryl Petocz said. “There was lots of bottles of wine that she drank. She was clearly not in a clear state.  I told her I was calling police. As soon as I said that, she grabbed few things and ran out the house, out the back door.”

A St. Johns County deputy found Layton one block from the house and she was very apologetic about the incident. She also said she would return the pajamas to the homeowner. The police report said that Layton had trouble breathing and was taken to Flagler Hospital. Layton’s mother told police while at the hospital that she is suicidal. According to officers, Layton said she went to the home to ‘escape,’ not have to sleep outside and to be alone.

Layton said she knows the friend only as Jeremy. She claims he got to the house before her, broke the back door, took two bottles of wine and left the door on the balcony open for her to access the house.
