Texas Man Arrested for Setting Girlfriend on Fire

A man from Azle, Texas was arrested on Sunday night after he reportedly set his girlfriend on fire, according to KENS5.

The Parker County Sheriff’s Office arrested Mark Morgan Upchurch on Sunday night after deputies were called by a neighbor.

When Upchurch was arrested, he reportedly told deputies the following:

“I think I know why y’all are here — because what I did to my girlfriend when I lost my mind.”

Officials from the Parker County Sheriff’s Office said that the victim, 37, suffered burns to more than 30 percent of her body. She was taken to a Dallas hospital in critical condition with first-and-second-degree burns.

The victim was taken to the Harris Southwest Hospital by a neighbor. The neighbor also accused Upchurch of intentionally setting the woman on fire.

The man said he saw the victim run from the driveway of her home on Riverbend Street and screamed, “Mark set me on fire!”

“The neighbor told deputies he observed her skin peeling off and immediately drove her to the hospital for medical treatment,” the statement read.

A 2005 black Saturn was scorched on the inside and there were charred areas of the home’s yard, according to responding deputies. A propane torch and two gasoline containers were also found on the property. Upchurch has been charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury. The victim’s name has not been released.
