According to a new survey by the Harvard Institute of Politics, Democrats love the social media networking sites, Google Plus and Twitter, while Republicans are more interested in sharing information on Pinterest. This new study shows what social media networks young Americans between ages 18 to 29 are using, along with what political party they see themselves as. The New York Times has reported that, some social sites are more popular with one political party than another. Social media is the interaction among people in which they create, share or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks.
The poll was conducted from March 22 to April 4 and asked 3,058 Americans from the ages of 18 to 29 which social sites they had preferred to use. Democrats and Republicans used Facebook the same amount, 87 percent according to the New York Times.
Social networking sites play a modest role in influencing many U.S. users’ political views. According to the Huffington Post, in 2012, Adrien Chen wrote on Gawker that, “Pinterest is the most inoffensive, white-bread place on the Internet, a gated community of perfectly curated boards sprinkled with Etsy-made children’s toys and food blog recipes.”
When those who were surveyed were asked to choose “one website, social network or app” that they could not live without, 24 percent reported that they could not imagine being without Facebook, while 7 percent said Google was their site of choice.
Lee Rainie, the director of The poll by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project , reported in a statement, according to the Huffington Post, “For most of those who use the sites, political material is just a small portion of what they post and what they read. And the impact of their use of the sites is modest, at best.”
The study also asks young voters their opinions on potential 2016 candidates, such as Hillary Clinton and Governor Chris Christie, and according to MSNBC, on issues ranging from the legalization of marijuana to closing the gap in income disparity.
