The job market has been unforgiving for people in all industries and the same can be said for those in the legal industry. Graduates of top-ranked law schools are having an easier time securing full-time employment compared to graduates from law schools with lower rankings, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The latest rankings from the U.S. News & World Report combined with the American Bar Association employment stats, it seems as though the gap between the top 50 law schools and the rest of the list is massive. Graduates from the top 50 ranked law schools have an unemployment rate that is 60 percent lower than the unemployment rate for the rest of the ranked law schools.
Of the 2013 graduates from top 50 law schools, some 5 percent were still searching for a job in February, some nine months following their spring graduation. Of the 2013 graduates from the rest of the schools in the rankings, 14 percent of them were still looking for a job.
ABA data released last month shows that the unemployment rate for all of the 201 ABA-approved law schools comes in at 11.2 percent. This includes the top 50 schools from the U.S. News rankings.
Some 30 percent of all the 2013 graduates attended a school in the top 50 rankings. All of the Ivy League schools are on this list. Other schools on the list include Emory, Duke, Stanford and Tulane. Public law schools on the list include George Mason, North Carolina, Ohio State and Arizona State.
