HBO Signs Agreement with Amazon Prime

Amazon announced that on May 21, Prime Instant Video would become the first video-streaming service aside from HBO GO to have access to HBO original programming. Customers of streaming service Amazon Prime, according to Deadline New York, in the US will be able to watch TV shows including The Sopranos and The Wire as part of a multi-year agreement licensing agreement with subscription channel HBO. HBO is the oldest and longest continuously operating pay television service, basic or premium, in the United States.

Amazon’s director of content acquisition, Brad Beale, has reported that according to a report by BBC News, “HBO has produced some of the most groundbreaking, beloved and award-winning shows in television history.” HBO EVP of Business and Legal Affairs Glenn Whitehead says that “As owners of our original programming, we have always sought to capitalize on that investment.” This is the first time HBO programming will be licensed to an online-only subscription streaming service.

In an announcement from Amazon.com, Inc., according to Deadline New York, the company shared that “HBO has produced some of the most groundbreaking, beloved and award-winning shows in television history, with more than 115 Emmys among the assortment of shows coming to Prime members next month,” said Brad Beale, Director of Content Acquisition for Amazon. “HBO original content is some of the most-popular across Amazon Instant Video—our customers love watching these shows. Now Amazon Prime members can enjoy a collection of great HBO shows on an unlimited basis, at no additional cost to their Prime membership.” It has been reported that over time, early seasons of other shows such as “Girls,” “The Newsroom” and “Veep” will make their way onto the service. HBO’s president of programming sales, Charles Schreger, said that “We are excited to have our programming made available to [Amazon’s] vast customer base,” according to BBC News.
