James G. Snell, the co-chair of Bingham McCutchen’s Intellectual Property Group and also that of the Privacy & Security Group has left the law firm to join as a partner in the Privacy & Security practice of Perkins Coie. Snell will be working from the Palo Alto office of the law firm.
Snell is a member of the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) as a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP). He is co-chair of the IAPP’s San Francisco Bay Area Knowledgenet program, San Francisco Bay area Intellectual Property Inns of Court, and a former chair of the Cyberspace Law Committee of the State Bar of California.

Snell advises clients in numerous difficult matters involving Internet and privacy issues, trade secrets, patent litigation, data security issues and class action issues. He has wide experience in privacy policies, Internet and marketing issues, junk email laws, behavioral advertising, spyware issues, the Communications Decency Act and computer crimes defined by the Electronic Communications Privacy Act.
He is also a recognized expert in matters involving Stored Communications Act, Computer Fraud and Abuse Act and the Telephone Consumer Protection Act.
Snell defended the first lawsuit filed under the CAN-SPAM Act and the first lawsuit filed under Michigan’s Child Protection Registry. His patent litigation experience includes representing clients in various jurisdictions including California, New Hampshire, Texas, Massachusetts, Utah and the International Trade Commission. Among other jurisdictions, he has represented several foreign clients in patent litigation, including companies based in China, Taiwan and Japan.

Snell earned his J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law and his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
