Former Hollywood Personal Assistant Talks to New York Magazine

Neither the assistant nor the star is named in the article, but the story details some of the awful things a personal assistant to the stars has to go through. The former assistant wrote a tell-all in New York Magazine about what it was like working for an unnamed “Hollywood household name,” according to Fox News, and even broke up with a very prominent actor boyfriend of hers.

According to NY Magazine, the assistant recalls in the story, “She told me, ‘Accept the date on my behalf. Take the date. Go instead of me.’ So, that’s what I did. You would think sending a text is the worst — no. Sending your assistant to break up with him is the worst.”

The celebrity personal assistant also described living with the star and waking up at 4 or 5 in the morning to begin tasks for the day. Other duties included having a Starbucks coffee for the actress at her bedside every morning, summarizing the news, summarizing scripts and buying all the of the best-sellers the actress wouldn’t read.

According to Fox News, the assistant also described smuggling drugs on a plane for the celebrity boss in another instance.

“She said ‘herbs’ because she was being holistic, and I was naïve and thought it was something herbal to help her calm down… I could have gotten arrested! You could have at least told me so I knew what I was doing, and put it in the bag that’s not checked! What are you doing to me?” the assistant shared.

Cofounder of the Grapevine Agency, Rachel Zaslansky Sheer, an L.A.–based staffing company that matches assistants to high net-worth individuals and celebrities such as Tom Cruise, Angelina Jolie and Arianna Huffington, says Celebrity assistants are always in demand. “We’re busy, even in this economy.”

If you can tough it out on a 24/7 schedule, you’ll be handsomely rewarded. It has been reported that “You can make up to $200,000 a year if you’re an assistant who literally travels on tour with someone and never goes home,” according to DivineCaroline.com.
