Dentons Enters Merger Talks with Patton Boggs, Squire Sanders

Dentons has joined the merger discussions between Patton Boggs and Squire Sanders, according to The Lawyer.

This is the second merger play in less than a year for Dentons. This conversation comes just three months after the firm ended its merger talks with McKenna Long & Aldridge. A spokesperson for the firm said that it “has made a serious overture to Patton Boggs leadership” to combine the firms.

Patton Boggs entered merger discussions with Squire Sanders in February after negotiations with Locke Lord failed at the end of 2013.

If Dentons were to merge with Patton Boggs, it would give the combined firm 90 offices globally and provide Dentons with the extra weight it has been looking for in the United States. The combined firm would have offices in more than 50 countries.

A spokesperson from Dentons said, “We can confirm that Dentons has made a serious overture to Patton Boggs’ leadership about a combination to form a new firm together.

“We hold Patton Boggs and its lawyers and professionals in high regard, and our interest in conversations between our firms and partners remains high.”

This news comes weeks after Patton Boggs and Squire Sanders began their merger discussions. If Patton Boggs merges with Squire Sanders it would give the firm 1,700 lawyers across 22 countries. This merger would come at a time of expansion for Squire Sanders and amid layoffs at Patton Boggs. Patton Boggs cut 65 employees in the United States last year.
