Alberto Gonzales Named Dean of Belmont University

Former President George W. Bush’s administration, U.S. attorney general Alberto Gonzales, has been named dean of Belmont University. Alberto Gonzales, who was U.S. attorney general from 2005 to 2007, appointment as dean is effective June on 1. Prior to serving as attorney general, Gonzales was Bush’s White House legal counsel. He replaces founding Dean Jeff Kinsler, who has decided to become a full-time faculty member of the law school.

Belmont University is a private university located in Nashville, Tennessee, United States. It is the largest Christian university in Tennessee and the second largest private university in the state. The U.S. News & World Report ranked it number 5 of masters-degree universities in the South. Rolling Stone and Time Magazine have also both ranked Belmont University as having one of the “top music business schools” in the United States. As dean, The Tennessean reported that, Alberto Gonzales will serve as the chief academic and executive officer for Belmont’s College of Law.

Alberto Gonzales has said that “I look forward to being a part of this.” During a speech on Wednesday Gonzales noted the enthusiastic students, “but most of all I look forward to continuing to interact with the students as we all work together collectively to make Belmont the greatest law school that it can be,” he said according to The Tennessean.

The nation’s first Hispanic attorney general, Alberto Gonzales according to the Star Tribune, resigned after a controversy over the politically motivated firings of nine U.S. attorneys and amid an uproar over the allegations of the torture of terrorism suspects.

“I am honored by this opportunity and grateful for the support of President Fisher and Dr. Burns. I look forward to working with the outstanding faculty, staff and students at Belmont College of Law,” Alberto Gonzales said in a statement, according to News Channel 5. The law school’s first graduating class will be celebrated in May.
