American Airlines Employee Apologizes to Deaf Couple

American Airlines, Inc. is headquartered in Fort Worth, Texas. The former parent company of American Airlines, AMR Corporation, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November 2011, and in February 2013 announced plans to merge with US Airways Group, creating the largest airline in the world.

An American Airlines employee reportedly attached a handwritten note to one of it’s customers James Moehle and Angela Huckaby’s bags as they were returning home to Houston from a vacation in Hawaii. According to the Huffington Post, the note that the employee attached referred to the pair as “deaf and dumb.”

Kaye Moehle, mother of James Moehle, reported that the note was “outrageous and cruel and unnecessary.” She told The Associated Press that, “I felt hurt for my son because I know how hard he works.” James Moehle has worked for the same heating and Air Conditioning Company for 16 years.

The employee has apologized. Casey Norton, an American Airlines spokesman said that the employee who had written the note had not intended to insult anyone and will go through a sensitivity training course.

According to Kaye Moehle “The public hopefully has been educated a little more to know that the term ‘deaf and dumb’ has no place in our society, like other derogatory labeling of other good people.”
