News broke on Monday that actor James Rebhorn passed away at the age of 65 at his home in South Orange, New Jersey, according to The New York Times. Rebhorn was most recently in the hit Showtime series “Homeland.” Dianne Busch, Rebhorn’s agent, said that the cause of death was melanoma.
Rebhorn was a regular presence on television and in movies as a supporting actress. His career repertoire includes more than 50 films. Some of those include “Independence Day,” “Meet the Parents” and “My Cousin Vinny.”
“Homeland” is in its fourth season on Showtime. Rebhorn played Frank Mathison, father of C.I.A. agent Carrie Mathison.
Rebhorn loved to joke that the majority of the characters he played liked to wear suits. He played the secretary of defense in the 1996 hit “Independence Day” with Will Smith and he was in the series finale of “Seinfeld” as an assistant district attorney.
Rebhorn was a member of the Roundabout Theater Company and appeared on Broadway quite a few times throughout his career.
Rebhorn was born in Philadelphia in 1948. He is survived by his wife Rebecca Linn and his daughters Hannah and Emma. Rebhorn’s career began in television commercials and in theater before he moved to film and television shows.
