Four gay couples and Wyoming Equality have filed a suit challenging the state’s ban on same-sex marriage. Wyoming Equality is the state’s largest civil rights organization dedicated to securing full equality for Wyoming’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community. Its members include same-sex couples throughout the state. A spokesman for Wyoming Republican Governor Matt Mead, Renny MacKay said in an e-mailed statement, “Governor Mead has not reviewed the complaint at this time.”
Bloomberg News reports that Wyoming is the smallest U.S. state by population, according to the 2010 census, with 563,626 residents. Wyoming is also the only U.S. state that has no published sodomy cases. A Public Policy Polling survey in July 2013 found that 57% of Wyoming voters thought that same-sex marriage should be legal, while 32% thought it should be illegal and 11% were not sure. A separate question on the same survey found that 64% of respondents supported legal recognition of same-sex couples, with 28% supporting same-sex marriage, 36% supporting civil unions, 32% opposing all legal recognition and 3% was not sure.
Mary Cheney is the younger daughter of former Vice President of the United States, Dick Cheney, and is a former employee of the Colorado Rockies baseball team and Coors Brewing Company, a campaign aide to the Bush re-election campaign. She is an open lesbian. Mary grew up in Wyoming and she is an advocate for same-sex marriage.
