Only one winning ticket was sold for the Wednesday night drawing of the U.S. Powerball lottery, according to The Chicago Tribune. It was sold at a gas station located in Milpitas, California, according to lottery officials.
The Powerball website reported the winning numbers as 1, 17, 35, 49, 54, and 34. The gas station, the Dixon Landing Chevron, is going to be awarded a $1 million payment for selling the ticket. There have been no details released by lottery officials about the winner.
It is the fourth-largest prize for the Powerball and the sixth-largest in the history of the United States. A Powerball spokesperson in New York said that the prize for the game rolled over and rose 15 times since the last jackpot was won, which was on Christmas Day.
If the winner takes the prize in a lump sum, he or she would receive $227.8 million.
The prizes for Powerball have increased greatly in the last two years because the ticket prices have increased from $1 per ticket to $2 per ticket. There are 43 states, Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands that partake in the Powerball game.
No matter how many tickets a player buys, he or she has a one in 175 million chance of winning the Powerball jackpot. The largest winner in Powerball’s history came in May of 2013 when a Floridian brought home $590 million prior to taxes.
According to the Powerball website, the average jackpot hovers around $255 million. The site also notes that 70 percent of winners purchase their tickets using numbers generated by the computer.
