Catholic Nuns Aided by the U.S Supreme Court

The U.S Supreme Court came to the aid of Catholic nuns. Federal regulations due to the Obama administration’s health care provisions would have forced the nuns to “comply with a federal requirement to provide free contraceptive coverage for employees,” against their religious beliefs.

Groups that claimed that the Obama administration “wasn’t doing enough to accommodate religious objections to the contraceptive rule filed four complaints yesterday.” The Patient Protection and Affordable care act basically has provisions that the Catholic nuns object to- not for others in their choices- but in that the government will force them to make choices they don’t agree with. In cases where catholic hospitals were forced by federal mandates to provide abortions or be shut down, they would rather shut down, than take actions that are against their faith. And so in NYC alone many Catholic charitable non-profit hospitals have closed. Where is the religious tolerance now?

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear suits brought on religious grounds against the birth-control mandate, according to Bloomberg. Though the arguments brought by the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Washington and the region’s Archdiocese’s school were rejected initially, they are being appealed now. Ultimately U.S. District Judge Amy Jackson decided that the Church’s argument that forcing the catholics to provide contraception did not “violate religious freedom,” the appeals court has not heard the last of it. I remain uncertain as to why of all people nuns and such would be forced to provide contraception as its against their religion. Where is the tolerance for religious differences? While the judge who ruled it was not Catholic, the majority of Americans (80%) and decreasing- are also not Catholic. The minority of Catholics over the course of American history have been a second class of papists and have not been at the same level politically as protestant Christian. To date, the two Catholic presidents that the United States has ever had, Cleveland and Kennedy have both been assassinated. Catholics across the country await the decision that holds much of their future in the balance.
