The Devyani Khobragade Incident

Diplomat Devyani Khobragade was arrested on December 12 on West 97th Street and charged with visa fraud and making false statements. She was strip-searched and held with other female suspects. Later that day, she was presented before a U.S. magistrate judge and then Devyani Khobragade was released on a $250,000 unsecured bond. Indian media sources have claimed that after her arrest, she was handcuffed, strip searched, DNA swabbed, and subjected to a cavity search. Indian news show that people are in uproar at this terrible situation that happened this diplomat.

Devyani Khobragade hired Sangeeta Richard, 42, an Indian national from the state of Kerala, in November 2012 as a nanny and domestic servant, and also arranged for a US visa to bring Sangeeta Richard to New York. She worked on a U.S. holding A-3 Visa, which is a non-immigrant Visa and permits the holder to work anywhere in U.S.

Daniel Arshak, is the lawyer for Devyani Khobragade, 39, who is charged with lying on her visa application about the wages she paid her Indian babysitter. He claims that an agent with the U.S. State Department misread a form the diplomat helped the babysitter fill out, along with related documents, said Arshak, according to Bloomberg News. “This case should never have been brought,” attorney Daniel Arshak stated on December 23. Others consider that Devyani was attempting fraud, and abused her station.
