The United States Air Force Band marveled museum visitors yesterday with it’s first ever flash mob. It was a four-minute performance featuring an original arrangement of “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring/Joy to the World,” led by Colonel Larry K. Lang, the band’s commander and conductor.
The United States Air Force Band’s official military life began on September 24, 1941, with the formation of the boiling Army Air Forces Band under the sponsorship of Lieutenant L.P. Holcomb, commanding officer of the Air Base Group at Boiling Field. Since that time the band has inspired the heart and minds of countless listeners across the globe under the leadership of 12 diverse and talented conductors.
The flash mob started with a single cellist on the floor of the museum’s Milestones of Flight gallery. Soon the gallery was filled with 120 musicians that were pouring into the gallery from behind airplanes and space capsules, and there were vocalists bursting into song from the museum’s second floor balcony, according to Dvidshub.net.
It was a breathtaking experience and the visitors at the museum were exhilarated by the performance. This was the United States Air Force band’s first ever flash mob. It was the first flash mob to be produced by one of the five military branches’ top bands, according to the United States Air Force Band Public Affairs.
