USC Gets New Law School

South Carolina will be getting a new law school. The designs for the expansive school building and campus have been approved by the City of Columbia’s design review board, according to The State. The pending law school will cost eighty million dollars and will encompass 187, 500 square feet with three stories and a courtyard. The school is set to open in 2016 and will be more expansive. The parking lot will supply room for a future addition to the school. The building itself will be made from limestone, bricks and metal. It will be welcoming students just one year before the school’s 150th anniversary.

The building of the law school will benefit students since the current law school lacks updated classrooms that modern students need in this time of evolving technology. The school also has a goal to open a children’s law center during the opening of the new law school, according to the State.

Originally South Carolina College in 1867, The University of South Carolina law school is renowned for being one of the ten best academic schools. The prestigious law school was awarded membership in the Association of American Law Schools in 1917. Moving into the 1920’s the law school offered students a three year course study. Moving up to the present, today the school offers eleven duel degree choices. Major law fields of study include business law, international law, criminal law, litigation and trial advocacy, environmental, and family law. The school also offers a study abroad law program. There is also the Children’s Law Center that specializes in child abuse and neglect litigation. Notable journals are published by the school and many student enterprises are maintained on campus including a growing Women in Law organization.
