John Marshall Law School Opens More Spacious Legal Clinic for Veterans

The John Marshall Law School Veterans’ Legal Support Center has had a ribbon-cutting opening up a new 5,300 square foot space in a renovated 100 year old building, according to CBS.

Executive director Brian Clauss commented, “the majority of what we do is complex VA appeals; people who were denied benefits, or denied the appropriate percentage of benefits. The clinic helps veterans with other legal problem as well, such as “criminal cases, housing issues or family law concerns.” This type of clinic is the largest in the U.S. of its type.

Veterans comment that going through the red tape from this organization to that process back through and around the “maze of bureaucracy” with the U.S. Veterans Administration is very frustrating, he continues to say that he is ultimately happy with the service they provide and is grateful for it as well.

One law school student who volunteers at the center, Navy veteran Michael Hoffman says he understands the situation that veterans have with their system, and he gets their frustration. “I went through the veterans’ benefit system myself. It was very difficult, very long.” He continues to say that he was in Florida which has a huge backlog and that his entire process took three years. Volunteering to help those that protect and defend America is a generous deed. The legal clinic administers service to those veterans in need of assistance and they have commented, “the legal center at John Marshall Law School is a big help.”
