The University of Oregon’s School of Law’s Legal Research and Writing program has received almost $1 million dollars establishing the Morris J. Galen Fund. This fund will support different opportunities that will enable student writing.
An initial objective that will be a primary consideration for the fund is to annually appoint the “Galen Scholar in Legal Writing,” according to Around the O. The appointed scholar will be a “faculty member committed to excellence” in the area of student legal writing. Each year will see a different theme, and a new designation, as each person will have a single year appointment.
Another objective of the Galen Scholarship is to expand “upper level writing courses.” This current academic year, spanning fall 2013 to spring of 2014, the University of Oregon School of Law has already added three new class sections, “Writing in Law Practice.”
The U of O School of Law is a public law school that was founded in 1884 in Portland, Oregon. Initially the school began as a two year program that was later expanded to there years. The University of Oregon is known for possessing the nation’s first public law school to establish an environmental law program. The environmental law program is ranked 6th in the country by U.S. News & World Report for the 2012-13 academic year. The program includes a master’s of law degree, the L.L.M.
