Assassination Attempt on Egyptian Minister Fails, Terrorist Wave ‘Just Beginning’

An Egyptian interior minister survived a terrorist car bomb attack and commented that a “wave of terrorism by opponents of the military-installed government [is] just beginning,” according to Reuters. Minister Mohamed Ibrahim had overseen the violent crackdown on Mohamed Mursi’s supporters in the violent suppression of protesting in the Egyptian public squares and parks. The streets were lined with protesters and many are now among the uncounted dead, lined neatly in mosques, covered in white sheets with black market scrawls of their names. The crackdown has been harsh, and the media in Egypt has not covered it in the national news. Many people have little understanding of the true nature of the violence that has been used and the force that has been put against the protesters.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and Mursi’s Muslim Brotherhood has condemned it, although they have been accused by the government of inciting violence and of committing terrorism. The attack on the minister possibly involved a “suicide bomber with a large number of explosives, as well as a follow-up fusillade by two gunmen.” Reporters on site saw blood and flesh charred and scattered on the ground in the wreckage. The ministry of the Egyptian interior has analyzed the wreckage and commented that a “[110lg] bomb was used.” Leaders of Mursi’s Brotherhood have been arrested, and more than 900 of its supporters have been killed. While some Egyptians support the crackdowns a bystander added in his two cents. “Innocent people have died today but the government needs to know that terrorism will bring more terrorism and violence will bring more violence.”
