Vinson & Elkins Hires Highly Lauded Lawyer Michael Charlson

Vinson & Elkins’ recent acquisition of corporate governance litigator Michael Charlson, who has a sprawling multi-decade career of experience in securities litigation and enforcement, demonstrates how integral a professional reputation can be. Charlson has been building his standing since he graduated from Berkeley Boalt Hall of Law in 1985, spending some time as law clerk for the Honorable William C. Canby Jr. of the United States Court of Appeals, for the Ninth Court, before spending 22 years working at Heller Ehrman, gaining a wide range of experience.

“Michael’s practice and personality make him a natural fit for our clients and our firm,” said V&E Managing Partner Scott Wulfe. “His national practice and extensive experience with both private securities litigation and the SEC offers key experience to our clients. He’s an important and strategic addition to our team.”

The extensive experience Wulfe mentioned include working as a managing partner at Ehrman’s Silicon Valley office, and for three years working as managing partner of Hagan Lovell’s Bay area office. He’s also worked securities for pharmaceutical, technology, and financial services clients; he’s represented corporations, officers, directors, venture investors, auditors, and underwriters, handing numerous internal investigations, and handling cases of improper securities trading.

“Michael helped lead a team that secured a jury verdict for defendants in one of the few securities class actions that have gone to trial. His broad command of securities litigation and extensive experience with the SEC will substantially help us expand our outstanding securities litigation and SEC enforcement practices to include the West Coast,” said V&E Partner John Wander, who heads the firm’s Complex Commercial Litigation Practice Group. “Everyone who knows Michael speaks highly of him. We are thrilled to welcome Michael to our team.”

Charlson is taking his game to Vinson, in part, to deepen and expand his range of experiences, saying that “Vinson & Elkins’ diverse practice areas and its presence in key business centers around the world, including San Francisco and Silicon Valley, make it a very attractive platform from which to build. I’ve already worked closely on a number of matters with V&E partners, and have come away consistently impressed. Joining a firm where I know my values align on issues such as work product quality, client service and team-focused solutions to complex client problems made this the right move. I couldn’t be more pleased and look forward to the path ahead.”

With 675 lawyers in 16 worldwide offices, Vinson will indeed give him a platform for growth, to build his already stellar professional reputation.
