Brown Rudnick Hires Stephen Best, the Lawyer of Mark Cuban

Stephen Best, the lawyer who is defending billionaire basketball team owner Mark Cuban has left Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck to join Boston based law firm Brown Rudnick. Best is a well-known lawyer who advises Fortune 100 companies in regulatory compliance and government investigations.

Best said that he decided to move to Brown Rudnick’s Washington office because the law firm has a white collar practice that is growing in strength. He did not think that his change of law firms is going to affect his representation of Mark Cuban.

Speaking on his representation of Cuban, Best said, “It is my commitment to Mark that this transition has absolutely no impact on his matter other than to improve the support surrounding me as I prepare to defend his case.” Best believes that his move would help him to gain support of a bigger number of white collar lawyers for the case. Currently, Brown Rudnick has 12 white-collar defense lawyers placed in London, Washington and Orange County.

Best has a huge portfolio of oil and gas clients, as well as insurance and media companies. He was the co-chair of the white-collar criminal defense and investigations at Dewey & LeBoeuf and worked in the firm for eight years before leaving it in 2010. From 2010 to 2013 he served as the Chair of the white-collar defense practice at Brownstein Hyatt.

Best’s portfolio includes previous clients like Zurich Financial, the former vice chair of Enron Corporation and Delta Petroleum. He is considered an authority in Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and government investigations.

Apparently, he did not think that the 3-member white-collar defense team in Washington at his previous firm was sufficient to handle the case of Cuban, who has been accused by the SEC of insider trading over his stake in Mamma.com in 2004.
