Sidley Austin Announces New Partner, Stephen Ross

On Monday, Sidley Austin LLP announced that Stephen Ross, formerly of Man Group PLC, will be joining the firm as both a partner and as the co-head of the London office’s Investment Funds Group. Stephen Ross was well known for his position as Group General Counsel of Man Group, which is the world’s second largest hedge fund manager.

Prior to his work at Man Group, Ross was the co-head of the Private Funds Group of a Magic Circle law firm, and held several other leadership positions including serving as a member of the Executive Board, and was both the Global Head of Product Structuring & Financing and Head of Product Operations. In 2011, Man’s 100-member legal team was named Legal Week’s Legal Department of the Year.

“Stephen is well-known and respected in asset management circles, and will be a great addition to our existing team of fund lawyers,” said Bruce Gardner, co-head of Sidley Austin’s London Investment Funds group. “I look forward to working with Stephen and to the value Stephen will add, not only to our practice in London but overall to our internationally recognized global asset management practice.”

“Stephen will be a great addition to our talented team of funds lawyers,” said Mike Schmidtberger, Managing Partner of Sidley’s New York office and co-head of the global Investment Funds practice. “His virtually unique level of experience will make him a particularly valuable resource for our clients.”

Sidley Austin LLP is one of the leading legal advisors for businesses and financial institutions. Ross’s new role will have him overseeing a large portion of the firm’s 1,750 attorneys spread across 18 offices around the world.

Ross expressed enthusiasm for his new position. “I’m delighted to be joining Sidley. The firm has a real depth of expertise and credibility internationally in my practice area, and this creates the ideal platform for my return to private practice. I am excited at the prospect of providing clients with the benefit of my mix of private practice and in-house experience.”
