Jim Carrey Makes Parody Video and Song Attacking Gun Advocates

Comedian Jim Carrey fired the first ‘shot’ at gun enthusiasts. Carrey appeared in a sketch comedy for the website “Funny or Die” that satirizes “Planet of the Apes” star Charlton Heston and his love of guns.

Heston was the head of the NRA from 1998 to 2003 and he died at 84 in 2008 due to complications from Alzheimer’s. Carrey plays Heston and a member of the twisted country band performing on “Hee Haw,” the television show that aired in the 1970s on CBS.

Carrey is the lead singer of “Lonsome Earl and the Clutterbusters.” He sings the parody song titled “Cold Dead Hand.” Some of the lyrics include “The angels wouldn’t take [Heston] up to heaven like he planned/Because they couldn’t pry that gun from his cold dead hand.”

Heston accidentally shoots his foot off at the end of the video, which amuses the band-mates of Lonesome Earl. One of his band-mates is Abraham Lincoln. The lyric mentioned earlier and the title of the song come from a speech Heston gave to the NRA in the middle of the 2000 presidential election. In the speech, Heston said that gun control supporters would have to take his guns from his ‘cold dead hands.’

Carrey took to Twitter this past weekend to promote the video, tweeting some of the following comments:

“‘Cold Dead Hand’ is abt u heartless motherf%ckers unwilling 2 bend 4 the safety of our kids.Sorry if you’re offended…”

“The important question is ‘Do we possess guns in America or do guns possess us?'”

“Over a million ppl have been killed by guns in the US since John Lennon was shot. Look no further than your own back…”
