Bail Granted for Oscar Pistorius

Bail was granted for Oscar Pistorius this week by a judge who said that the Olympian is not a flight risk. The bail was set at $112,771. Pistorius appeared in court with two of Reeva Steenkamp’s family as the judge issued his ruling. The decision was cheered by Pistorius’ family.

The judge who issued the ruling noted that it is very improbable for Pistorius to flee the country for multiple reasons. They include his fame and because he is a double amputee. The lawyer for Pistorius said that if he were to go through airport security it would set off multiple alarms.

The judge also noted that the prosecutor was unable to prove that Pistorius has a propensity for violence. This means that he would probably not kill while out on bail. Prior to issuing his ruling, the judge asked the prosecutor on the case a question. The question was how come Pistorius not stage a break-in to make his story believable since he said he thought an intruder was in the bathroom the night his girlfriend was murdered.

The answer from the prosecutor was, “The fact that we have only one survivor of that tragic night is difficult for the state.”

The lawyer for Pistorius said that the charge against his client should be lowered to “culpable homicide.”
