During a special edition of Lawrence O’Donnell’s television show on MSNBC, the host condemned the comments made by National Rifle Association President Wayne LaPierre during his press conference last week. The comments were in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.
O’Donnell typically does not appear on television on Fridays, but after LaPierre’s comments, he decided that he needed to make an appearance. LaPierre, during his press conference, said that armed police officers need to be present in every school in the country. His comments were met with some very harsh criticism.
LaPierre was called a “lobbyist for mass murderers” by O’Donnell. He also denounced LaPierre for trying to take issue with the coverage by the media of the shooting in Connecticut. O’Donnell mentioned one of the points used by LaPierre. That point was the power of the gun that the shooter used during the attack. Each bullet traveled 3,200 feet per second, according to O’Donnell.
“Is there really something to quibble about in how powerful a bullet is when it is heading toward a six-year-old at the speed of 3200 feet per second? What kind of desperate, cornered rat would dare to mention that the Sandy Hook shooter could have used a more powerful bullet? Could have what? Done more damage? Made the bodies of six-year-olds even more difficult to identify?”
