As hillbilly television reality shows such as “Duck Dynasty,” “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” and “Bayou Billionaires” become popular, so too have hillbilly porn movies. TMZ has reported that the obsession in America with backwoodsmen and women has grown so much that the porn industry has jumped into the fray to take advantage.
TMZ said that the popularity has rolled over into the porn industry as sales of hillbilly porn have almost tripled over the past two years. A representative for GameLink.com spoke to TMZ about the trend and said that the company has witnessed a 250 percent increase in Southern, white-trashy porn titles since 2010.
Hillbilly porn was one of that website’s worst sellers prior to 2010. But now, as shows like “American Hoggers,” “Swamp People” and “Hillbilly Handfishing” have grown in popularity, the porn industry has benefited as well.
Not many know or understand why this porn category has exploded onto the scene but many believe it could be linked to the same reasons why the reality television category has grown in popularity, which is the attraction to the ‘real deal.’
Earlier this year, the president and general manger at Animal Planet, Marjorie Kaplan, told the Washington Post that people watch reality hillbilly shows because of a “desire to connect back to something that’s a little more raw and a little bit more real.”
“Hillbillies are the epitome of that — no artifice, living in the moment, the real deal,” Kaplan said, and also said that her network has not “received any negative response at all.”
Michelle Dean, from Slate, said back in August that the popularity of hillbilly shows could be linked to the struggling economy of the country when she expressed her confusion over how Honey Boo Boo could be so popular.
“These shows reassure us that our struggle is worth it,” Dean writes, “all economic evidence to the contrary — if only because we would never belly-flop into the mud on cable television. “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” casts this socio-economic divide in especially sharp relief, since the show is rooted partly in beauty pageant culture, which, in its own idiosyncratic way, indulges the American belief that you can work and spend your way to greatness.”
