Baby Swallows Feather, Causing Neck to Swell

A seven-month old girl in Kansas was being treated by doctors who thought she had swollen glands. In fact, it turns out that the girl had a feather poking through her neck, according to The Associated Press.

The girl, Mya Whittington, was prescribed medication and sent home with her parents. After being sent home, her jaw swelled to close to the size of a golf ball.

Mya was taken back to the doctor’s office, which is when it was discovered that something was sticking out of her swollen jaw. The doctor put gloves on and pulled a feather from the neck of the baby.

“They pulled a feather out of my child,” Mya’s father Aaron Whittington, of Hutchinson, Kan., told CNN. “How crazy is that?’

It is believed that Mya either inhaled or swallowed the feather, which pierced the inside of her cheek or throat, according to doctors.

“The body, being crazy as it is, it just rejected it and started forcing it out,” Whittington said.

KCTV reported that Mya would only cry when nurses poked around her neck and never really seemed to be in pain during the whole ordeal despite doctors saying she probably was. The girl’s neck is still swollen, but the doctors did say that it would recede without medication.
