Loeb & Loeb Adds Litigator to Consumer Protection Defense Department in Chicago

Loeb & Loeb LLP, a multi-service law firm with over 300 attorneys and offices in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Nashville, Washington, DC, Beijing, and Hong Kong announced additions to the law firm.

Litigator Livia M. Kiser has signed on board to the firm’s Consumer Protection Defense Department as a partner in the Chicago office. Loeb & Loeb’s Consumer Protection Defense Department is made up of attorneys who defend government enforcement actions, investigations, and private class action lawsuits. These cases usually allege violations of consumer protection and unfair competition laws. Consumer protection is about enhancing consumer confidence in federal and state laws that protect against fraud, deception, and unfair business practices. Non-competition is about one party agreeing not to compete against another, leaving the consumer with fewer choices and possibly higher pricing for goods and services.

Most recently, Kiser was a partner at Barack Ferrazzano Kirschbaum & Nagelberg LLP in Chicago. Barack Ferrazzano Kirschbaum & Nagelberg LLP has practices in real estate, commercial litigation, and financial services.

Kiser has defended clients in the automotive, financial, retail, and food industries against claims of consumer fraud, false labeling, false advertising, and warranty breach, arising under Illinois and federal law.  Generally, consumer fraud may affect many aspects of life, including individual finances, privacy, and identity.

Kiser has worked on over 40 consumer class action lawsuits at different litigation stages, including removal, consolidation, expert discovery, class certification, preparing and arguing motions, and trial and appellate practice.

In the automotive industry, Kiser often represents domestic and foreign automobile manufacturers and distributors in disputes stemming from consumer protection statutes and other laws. Disputes may involve defects in the design of products, inadequate warning, or negligent conduct. Kiser has experience defending class action lawsuits involving false and misleading advertising.

Kiser has represented companies under investigation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The purpose of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is to protect investors, and keep the markets fair, orderly, and efficient. The Consumer Product Safety Commission assists in the recall of defective products. The U.S. Department of Agriculture investigates food safety.

The law firm handles a variety of consumer-related litigation, including economic product defect claims, marketing and advertising misrepresentation allegations, violations of consumer privacy claims, and finance-related issues.

Kiser is committed to pro bono legal services, and has concentrated on work involving children seeking asylum in the U.S. and children requiring special education services in schools. Kiser received her B.A. from the University of Illinois. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa. Kiser earned her J.D., cum laude, from Northwestern University. She was Order of the Coif.
