Was Diane Sawyer Drunk when Covering the Election?

News viewers were shocked watching Tuesday night’s ABC News’ election coverage when Diane Sawyer gave all the tell tale signs of being drunk — slurred words, exaggerated hand gestures, rambling sentences. She mused wether the exclamation point at the end of the Obama slogan showed the direction the presidency truly wished to go in. She propped herself up on her elbows, though normally she is austere in her presentation.

They Might Be Giants were among the first to speculate on the strange situation, when they added a Facebook comment “And Diane Sawyer declares the winner is… chardonnay!” The world of tweets was quick to pick up on the possibility, and within moments a new tweeter account, “Drunken Diana Sawyer” gained a thousand followers.

One of her friends explained that “She spent a number of sleepless nights preparing and rehearsing. It just caught up with her,” and denied any inebriation.

This hasn’t stopped endless fun and nonsense at her expense, with tweets saying such things as: “Drunk Diane, ftw! Election nights are hella stressful for journalists.”
