Tom Cruise Files Defamation Suit against Celebrity Magazines

On Wednesday, the “Mission Impossible” star, Tom Cruise, filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit against magazines that had claimed that he had abandoned his daughter Suri, after his divorce from actress Katie Holmes.

Defendant magazines include the likes of “In Touch” and “Life & Style.”

Cruise’s lawyer Bert Fields said in a statement, “Tom is a caring father who dearly loves Suri. She’s a vital part of his life and always will be. To say he has ‘abandoned’ her is a vicious lie. To say it in lurid headlines with a tearful picture of Suri is reprehensible.”

German publishing group Bauer Media owns the defendant magazines. In July the magazines carried headlines like “Abandoned by Daddy” and in September, “In Touch” alleged that six-year old Suri, had gone more than 44 days without seeing her father.

Fields stressed that despite a long career in Hollywood, Tom Cruise rarely resorted to litigation. He said, “He’s not a litigious guy. But when these sleazy peddlers try to make money with disgusting lies about his relationship with his child, you bet he’s going to sue.”

Cruise’s lawyer claimed that Cruise had sued for $50 million in damages and would give the money to charity if he wins the case.

This year in June, Katie Holmes apparently took Cruise by surprise when she sued for divorce after six years of marriage, while Cruise was filming in Iceland. The couple agreed to a custody arrangement over their child and settled all other matters privately.
