LG Advertises Their New IPS Screen by Pranking Elevator Riders to Think They are Dying

With a market saturated with every kind of commercial possible, businesses must hire creative people to make an ad with a difference. LG decided to prank innocent people (or actors pretending to be innocent people), to fool them into thinking they were about to die.

“So real it’s scary,” is the name of their ad, and it is designed to show-off their IPS displays. The commercial (see below) demonstrates how they made a faux-tile floor that was actually nine IPS screens. When the people get on the elevator and push for their floor, the sound effects go off and the seemingly safe tiles fall away, inspiring the hapless riders to leap for the rails and try to stand at the edge of the elevator.

Its an amusing stunt, but as usual, the commercial demonstrates the ingenuity of the commercial designers, not the product, because I imagine any of us would jump for the railing even if low quality tiles seemed to disappear from under our feet.

The new screens are supposed to give users “consistency and less changes in color temperatures,” with screens that “offer a color impression identical to that of the original image.”

Perhaps their next commercial will set up a fake window made of LG screens and have a video taped man shoot a gun at them — “so real it’s scary.”
