Facebook Hits 1 Billion Monthly Users

On Thursday, Facebook announced that it reached the 1 billion mark for users last month. The company is headquartered in Menlo Park, California and it reached its 1 billion mark on September 14 at 12:45 p.m. Pacific time. The company also said that it has 600 million mobile users. CEO Mark Zuckerberg appeared on ‘Today’ on NBC Thursday. When asked about making money, he said the following:

“I think it depends on your definition of ‘killing it.’ I mean we are making billions of dollars,” Zuckerberg said. “There’s 5 billion people in the world who have phones, so we should be able to serve many more people and grow the user base there.”

The 1 billion mark is an increase from the end of June, when the company said it had 955 million active monthly users. Also announced by the company was the fact that it has witnessed 1.13 trillion ‘likes’ since the new advertising feature was launched in February of 2009. Facebook said that its median age for a user is 22 and the top five countries for users are Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico and the United States.

In the second quarter, 84 percent of the company’s total revenue came from advertising. The company also offers users in the United States to buy and send gifts to other users. Those gifts include gift cards, eyeglasses and pastries.
