Bank Robbers Jettison Handfuls of Money During High Speed Chase

Like a scene from the first batman movie, where the Joker lured crowds of people into the streets as he released money into the air, bank-robbers in South Los Angeles drew crowds into traffic as they threw money from their black Volvo SUV dozens of times during an hour and a half police chase.

Whether the robbers intended to shed the money like a lizard sheds its tail, to distract the police with the crowds of greed-encouraged onlookers, or whether they intended some sort of Robin-Hood gesture is as yet unclear. What is clear is that when the SUV got trapped at a traffic light, and police moved in, so did a mob, eager to opportunize on this freak limited time offer.

“I can’t imagine they did this for the good of the community,” said Los Angeles Country Sherriff’s Department spokesman Capt Mike Parker.

“This isn’t something we see every day. This definitely had some unique aspects to it.”

Though disruptive crowds did muddle traffic, police were not balked.

“If they thought that by throwing the money out the window, that that would distract us or have people get in the way and block us – they’re going to run out of money,” said Parker. “We’re not going to run out of sheriff’s deputies. We’re not going to run out of helicopters. We’re gong to stick with them.”

Despite this boast, only two of the original four or five suspects have been apprehended, as of yet. The others escaped at opportune moments during the peculiar chase.
